Sweet Surender

The Great Comet of 1811, or the Flaugergues Comet, heralded one of the most exceptional vintages in winemaking history and the prestigious 1811 Château d‘Yquem bears testament to whispered legends about the inexplicable excellence of comet wines.

No less than Robert Parker Jr accorded the vintage white a perfect score of 100 in his universally recognised ratings, describing the opened bottle as “liquefied crème brûlée” and “the favourite sweet wine of millionaires”.

Grown in South Bordeaux, the “First Growth” Premier Cru Supérieur Château d‘Yquem wine owes its superiority to its extraordinary longevity and scarcity.

With only a handful of bottles in existence, this sweet Sauternes is the world’s most valuable white wine and the recent purchase of a bottle by renowned French sommelier Christian Vanneque was of great interest to the upper echelons of wine collectors.

Vanneque acquired the 19th-century vintage from London-based dealer The Antique Wine Company for USD117,000 (RM351,000) and the precious bottle was unveiled at the grand opening of his new restaurant late last month.

Fine wine connoisseurs can admire the centenarian centrepiece in its place of pride: a bulletproof, temperature- and humidity-controlled throne at the SIP Sunset Grill in Seminyak, Bali.
