In The Land of Time
In late January, the irresistible array of fine timepieces at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) sounded like a clarion call to dealers, watch connoisseurs and rather well-known personalities who converged in the spiritual home of watchmaking. Kenneth Tan reports from Geneva.
This year, the SIHH enters its third decade and, in its 21st edition, 19 brands – both contemporary and traditional – have come together in building the City of Fine Watchmaking, a high-ceilinged hall of horology.
The chattering tongues figure largely in the French, English and Chinese persuasion with a sprinkling of others, including German and Japanese. Trooping into the exhibition area, the visitors abandon their icy puffs of breath and their thick woollen coats at the cloakroom and gratefully make a beeline for the cosy warmth of the hall, where 2011 novelties star in lighted window displays.
