In the northern reaches of alpine Switzerland’s Schaffhausen, you’ll discover the modish-looking IWC watch museum. Design aesthetes will immediately be bowled over by the modern architecture and, within the structure, they will find that Zurich-based architects Smolenicky & Partner have stage-managed the exhibition space to perfection. The entire area is crafted to recall a, say it softly, gentlemen’s club, as the 143-year history of IWC’s masculine pieces await to be discovered. Timepiece connoisseurs will also enjoy a delightful walk into the west wing as multimedia 38 display cabinets pop out of industrial high-tech materials, with accents of macassar ebony, glass fibrereinforced plastic and high-gloss paint emphasizing the engineering-derived character of the IWC brand.
The biggest stars though, are the timepieces themselves, sitting quietly amid a glow of lights with 230 choice exhibits since the start of the brand’s illustrious heritage. Most importantly, an on-site boutique provides the necessary catharsis for the visitor, who can peruse a wide selection of specialties such as the Portofino, Pilot Watches and Diver’s watches.
