Hong Kong is fast-gaining a reputation as an international hub for top dollar art. Be they commercial or controversial in nature, the offerings at the city’s many galleries and events will spark the interests of commentators and collectors alike.
The question on the minds and the lips of everyone at the recent ART HK international art fair concerned the detention of a certain Mainland Chinese artist. “Where is Ai Weiwei?” was the question plaguing each interview and every artist, pouring fuel to the mystery behind the detention of contemporary Chinese art’s number one son.
The bearded artist bears striking resemblance to a mythical Taoist sage, albeit a currently muffled one. At the Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Centre, where the fair was held, Ai’s marble sculpture, The Marble Arm, which sent a middle-finger salute to the powers-that-be, was especially poignant. Art, it would seem, has long been a medium promulgating political agenda and protest. It is also big business – especially in Hong Kong.
