Glove Is All You Need

The increasing domination of Supermax Corporation Berhad in the global game of latex gloves owes its success to its Founder, Executive Chairman and Group Managing Director, Dato’ Seri Stanley Thai.

His business acumen and rapier-like agility in growing his company has fashioned a singularly unique business model that grows stronger and smarter with every passing year.

Winning the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Malaysia Award last year has also vaulted him to an international echelon of CEOs, and granted him the golden ticket to represent the country at the Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur of the Year event in Monte Carlo this month.

In an exclusive, he tells Kenneth Tan what it takes to create the lithe, imperious business machine that the world now knows as Supermax.

My first impression upon arriving at Dato’ Seri Stanley Thai’s palatial residence was the sentry-like repose of a pair of carved panther figurines, prowling around a giant vase of flowers.

In my subsequent conversation with Dato’ Seri Stanley, the wisdom of the panther becomes clear. “When we set up Supermax, we chose the panther as our logo because I think it’s aggressive and you can see that it is always watching like a guardian,” he says, settling into his chair.

Alluding to the sudden ferocity of this prolific hunter, he says: “In our way of doing business, we will strike and bite our competitors and our business philosophy is, if we don’t work together, we compete,” before adding, with a flourish, “and if we compete, we hit them hard!”
