Snow Expected

Even if you’re not the keenest of skiers, the ethereal landscape of China’s snowy north will deliver plenty of interest for the holiday-maker. Sonia Gomez reports from the powdery slopes in Manchuria.

When one thinks of skiing in Asia, one immediately envisions the touristfriendly slopes of South Korea and Japan, widely-renowned as the region’s best.

That may soon change, however, as China attempts to position itself as a bona fide ski destination and Yabuli, the birthplace of Chinese skiing – having started world-class facilities in the 80s – looks like it may be the coolest (read: coldest) place to be if you’re a killer skier.

With experts forecasting more than 20 million skiers in China by 2014, Frenchowned worldwide resorts operator, Club Med, recently made its maiden entry into China by opening Club Med Yabuli, a ski-in/ski-out resort that ranks amongst the best in the region.
